a friend of mine was travelling from england to spain and stopped off at paris looking for bed & breakfast, he thought the travel inn in england is about £40 per night and wont be much dearer in paris - it was 450 euro per night, the only thing he could get was a small B&B in the back streets.

If you only want a place to sleep & shower, then Residence du Palais may be right for you. I paid 54 euros per night (is that about 30 pounds?) at the end of September. For that price, I got a room that had 3 single beds, two clothing cabinets, 3 desks, 3 hard wooden chairs, a floor lamp, a tv/dvd player combo, and a shower room with separate toilet. That was room 22, on the 6th floor - take the elevator to the 4th, then go through the building to the other staircase and walk up two flights.
Rooms on other floors have private showers, but you have to share the toilet.
