At the Berlin Zoo, special efforts are made to create an environment for each animal type that is as close as is feasibly possible to its natural environment. Another aspect that demands a special note is the new home for the hippopotamuses that was opened in 1997. Today they are housed in a specially created type of aquarium that is surrounded and enclosed by special glass domes so that visitors may watch them. There is also a petting zoo at which children are permitted to pet and feed certain animals.
