The town of New Berlin, Ohio was originally laid out in 1831 by Samuel Bachtel and was situated on the Plain Township and Stark County line. German immigrants were the primary settlers of the community which was comprised of 23 property lots. The town remained fairly small throughout the 19th century with a little over 200 residents, but by the turn of the century, there were many agricultural endeavors in and around the town.   The interurban railroad that ran between Akron and Canton proved to be a catalyst for Berlin, Ohio linking with its surrounding communities, and the line ran right through the heart of town on Main Street. Because of the unpopularity of anything German during World War I, the name of the town was changed to North Canton in January of 1918. William H. “Boss” Hoover was a prominent citizen of the community at the time that owned a tannery, but soon changed his focus to manufacturing vacuum cleaners.   As Hoover’s business grew, so to did the Berlin, Ohio and by 1930, he employed over 1,400 people out of a population of just over 2,600. During the latter part of the 20th century, the construction of I-77 caused another growth spurt and towards the end of the century, there were nearly 15,000 residents in the community.   Touring Berlin, Ohio   When you spend time meandering along the country roads of Berlin, Ohio, it isn’t unusual to see quaint little retail shops situated next to a landscaped yard, or some small repair shop located in a storage shed. You may even see a furniture repair shop sitting adjacent to an old weathered barn. But the bottom line is that you’re looking at the way a hard-working family in Berlin, Ohio earns a living while staying at home and maintaining the lifestyle that is so characteristically Amish.   No doubt, Berlin, Ohio is the most commercialized area, other than Millersburg, in all of Ohio’s Amish country. It is an extremely tourist-oriented area and provides the tourist with a variety of opportunities to browse, shop, or just take a leisurely stroll throughout the city. The wide array of attractions, events, and shops in Berlin, Ohio make it perfect for walking tours or shopping and sightseeing. Just park your car (there is plenty of parking available) and begin your adventure.   Berlin, Ohio’s Top 4 Attractions   Whether it is an antique piece of furniture or a newer hand-crafted piece, you’ll find everything from the very modern to the nostalgic when visiting Berlin Ohio. The wide array of shops and stores will most likely overwhelm you at first, but the following four attractions are “must-sees” when visiting this delightful Amish community.   Der Bake Oven - oftentimes referred to as “the Bakery with a Heart”, this is a small town bakery and ice cream shop   J and J Woodcraft - features hand-crafted heirloom furniture at its finest   Shrock’s Amish Farm Complex - fine handmade boots, saddles, and Western Wear   Simple Blessings Cabin - after a hard day of dining, shopping, and sightseeing, this is the place to repose for the evening so you can have a fresh start the next day

Around one out of every seven Berlin residents is an immigrant, so it’s suffice to say that the capital city of Germany is a melting pot of different cultures and influences. The burgeoning dining scene in the city is a fine example of Berlin’s diversity and you can eat your way around sampling everything from traditional Currywurst (curried sausage) to foods from the Far and Middle East, as well as tasty treats from other European dining dynasties like France and Italy. When you’ve had your food fill then how about a visit to one of the many Berlin museums, where you can ogle at an array of collections from the ancient to the ultra-modern? Berlin’s Jewish Museum is a major destination for tourists and visitors alike. The largest Jewish Museum in Europe celebrates the achievements of German Jews and their contribution to culture, art and science amongst other fields. The building itself is an architectural work of art and the contents are extensive enough to merit sparing a few hours to spend here. Other popular museums to visit range from the Egyptian Nefertiti to the Greek Pergamon Altar and there is even a Helmut Newton museum for the fashion photography fans out there. Berlin’s museums and collections are as exciting as they are diverse, and as they’re scattered across the city you will never be too far away from a museum of one kind or another. There are countless places in Berlin for shopping sprees from upmarket designer establishments to flea markets and the whole spectrum in between. Luxury designer clothes stores can be tracked down at the west end of Kurfürstendamm and in Friedrichstrasse. Hackescher Markt is an interesting shopping district if you’re searching for the unconventional. An assortment of shops and small boutiques offer eclectic fashion and the area itself is worth a visit if you fancy sampling the unique finesse of the former east of Berlin where the streets simply ooze historical charm. At the new centre of Berlin, the Potsdamer Platz shopping centre boasts more than 100 stores where you can find everything from clothing and cosmetics to electronic gadgets and food. If you feel like having a drink or dance to end the day then Berlin will not disappoint. Some of the liveliest nightlife in Europe can be found in this fun loving capital and you can settle yourself anywhere from authentic beer halls and old Soviet era haunts right through to super slick bars and Latino nightclubs. If you are struggling to decide on where to start your adventures then there are hundreds of hotels in Berlin that should be able to point you in the right direction of things to see and do in this bustling city.

The citizens are friendly, the beer is fantastic and the food is something that you have to try over and over again.

Berlin is where the old meets the new. Just a few decades ago, the city of Berlin was divided into East Berlin and West Berlin. At the fall of the Soviet Union, the Berlin Wall came down and this opened up the world to a part of Berlin that was not seen by many before.

On first sight, you will notice that there are two very distinct parts to Berlin. The vast majority of old East Berlin is made up of what one would call stock architecture. This refers to the concrete blocks of apartments and Russian-influenced public buildings. On the other side of the spectrum, old West Berlin is made up of modern buildings, skyscrapers and works of architectural art. Although the bridge is changing with a lot of construction going on in the eastern side of Berlin, the differences are still quite apparent. These differences are what make the city of Berlin very special.

Never before has it been this easy to book a holiday to Berlin. There are many online websites that allow you to view maps of the areas, visit the hotels virtually and check out pictures of self-catering holiday apartments. The opportunities are endless and all you need is access to the Internet and a few minutes to spare.

It all depends on what exactly you are looking for in a holiday. Berlin offers much in terms of everything. The youth culture in the city is very big and here you will find some of the most interesting clubs and pubs. Although many of these places have a western slant to them, they still maintain a strong sense of German pride and identity and the youth is emerging as the real future of German culture.

On the other side of the coin, Berlin also offers you a lot in terms of culture and heritage. Berlin has some of the most incredible ballet houses and opera theatres on the planet and this does not just refer to the architecture. If you book early enough, you should be able to get good seats to see one of the shows on offer. Furthermore, the earlier you book, the cheaper your seats will be. This also refers to your air tickets and your accommodation. The city is not necessarily expensive, but it still charges First World prices, so make sure you start saving where you can so that you have more disposable income to splurge while you are on holiday in Berlin.
